
Ste Jeanne d'Arc School offers a comprehensive elementary academic program including religion, mathematics, English language arts, social studies, science, French, music, art, computers, and physical education.
The following courses are taught:
ART
GRADE: Kindergarten
In Kindergarten the children first begin using art mediums. Creativity is disciplined, positive, and constructive. Drawing and painting are fun, especially with a little guidance, encouragement and experimentation.
GRADE: One
The purpose of the art program is to teach children to properly use age-appropriate art materials. They learn to follow basic directions to create art projects as directed by the teacher. Students are encouraged to use their own creativity to complete projects.
GRADE: Two
The second grade art curriculum consists of a weekly lesson in guided drawing, painting or constructing a simple craft project. The purpose of the program is to provide guidance and direction while helping students develop creative skills, neatness, confidence in self, and joy in their work and the work of their peers. The most commonly used mediums for art are crayons and watercolor paints. When constructing crafts, students use glue, scissors, and household items.
GRADE: Three
The students will complete a teacher chosen project to the best of their ability. The teacher guides the children up at the board. Students are required to follow directions provided. Techniques and strokes are explained step by step. Students are graded on effort, attitude and the appearance of their product.
GRADE: Four
The purpose of the fourth grade art program is to allow the students the opportunity to explore the use of different mediums such as crayon, craypas, watercolor, and tempera paints. The students will create original works showing a variety of techniques such as painting, coloring, cutting, sewing, drawing, and weaving.
GRADE: Five
The purpose of the art program is to have the students use their creative abilities with a variety of mediums to which they are exposed. The students are taught skills and an appreciation for art. They learn to follow directions, make use of perspective, blend colors, and do assigned work in art and crafts.
GRADE: Six
The sixth grade Art program is project oriented. The students develop and create projects using different mediums. Many of the projects are based on seasons of the year.
GRADE: Seven
Art can lead students into many creative directions; creativity and individuality in student work is encouraged. Students are exposed to a variety of mediums, techniques, and projects to enhance art knowledge. Many projects are tied to the seasons and events throughout the year, encouraging cultural awareness.
GRADE: Eight
The purpose of the art program is to encourage an appreciation of art in all its forms, to help the student express his/her ideas through various mediums and to develop his/her own ability and skill in art technique.
COMPUTERS
GRADES: K-10
The purpose of the computer program is to teach students keyboarding, writing and editing skills on the computer, compiling database information, managing files, using graphics and multimedia, developing spreadsheets, and using Internet resources to help them learn necessary skills for the 21st century.
FRENCH
GRADE: Kindergarten
In kindergarten students learn the language through oral repetition and role playing. The kindergarten French program is completely oral.
GRADE: One
Students learn the language through oral repetition and role playing situations. The French program in the first grade is completely oral conversation.
GRADE: Two
Beginning in grade two the students are expected to construct oral and written sentences. They continue to take part in listening activities.
GRADE: Three
The third grade students learn the language through repetition, listening to cassettes, and flashcards. They learn to write complete sentences. They recite situation by memory. They are able to complete worksheets using audio cassettes.
GRADE: Four
The fourth grade students learn the language through repetition, use of puppets, and dictations, stories in a magazine, audio cassettes, and songs.
GRADE: Five
The fifth grade students are able to study the language through the use of audio cassettes, posters, flashcards and repetition of vocabulary through songs, poems, short stories in a magazine, textbook, and through "situations."
GRADE: Six
The sixth grade students are able to study and learn the language through the use of audiocassettes, posters, flashcards and repetition of vocabulary through songs, poems, short stories in a magazine, textbook, and through "situations."
GRADE: Seven
The purpose of the grade 7 French course is to continue the students' exposure of a second language. The four language skills (reading, writing, speaking, and listening) are reinforced as students explore a specific theme. By examining and using the language in a purposeful way, within the content of different communicative situations, students progress in their understanding and assimilation of French language patterns. Cultural projects enrich the course by allowing students to develop sensitivity to the francophone world.
GRADE: Eight
The purpose of the grade 8 French program is to expand the students' skills in the second language. Students focus on social, physical, civic, leisure and arts dimensions brought out in the various themes. Students engage in activities that require reading, writing, listening, and speaking in the target language. Cultural projects enrich the course by allowing students to develop sensitivity to the francophone world.
LANGUAGE ARTS
GRADE: Kindergarten
In the Open Court program students will experience learning how to read and respond to a variety of texts. The lessons provide the children with a solid foundation in phonemic awareness and introduce them to sounds/spelling associations. The students will be reading with fluency and comprehension.
GRADE: One
The purpose of the language arts program is to have children learn to read and respond to a variety of texts, write a paragraph incorporating basic grammatical concepts, and develop an appreciation of literature. In addition, students are taught strategies for accessing information. Specific programs for spelling, vocabulary, handwriting, and creative writing are incorporated to enhance the quality of reading and writing. Students are taught these skills through varying methodologies and materials, such as whole class instruction, cooperative groups, independent activities, books, songs, drills, and games.
GRADE: Two
The purpose of the second grade language arts program is to help the students develop fluency and comprehension in their reading through shared reading of stories and discussions. The students are exposed to a variety of literary genres and use these to explore unit concepts. The language arts program also encompasses spelling, grammar, handwriting, creative writing and vocabulary. The students are also challenged to use higher level thinking skills using a program known as Reading-Thinking Skills. They are also taught the skills needed for oral presentations to prepare them for the future.
GRADE: Three
The overall purpose of the language arts program is to provide the students with a well-rounded learning experience in reading and writing and in the use of the English language as a whole. The program encourages the students to take risks and pushes them to think on a higher level. Upon the completion of third grade, the students will have achieved fluency in reading and they will have broadened their skills in writing. Students will also have expanded their knowledge of grammar and its use. The vocabulary program is designed to build their knowledge of the English language while the spelling program is intended to reinforce letters and sounds of the alphabet.
GRADE: Four
The purpose of the fourth grade language arts program is to introduce a variety of genres and reading strategies. Students should be able to communicate effectively in written and oral language. At this level students become familiar with the research process.
GRADE: Five
The purpose of the fifth grade language arts program is to develop strong readers, writers, communicators, and thinkers. The program provides authentic literature for children to read. It provides learning in meaningful contexts with children actively participating. The program provides language development through an integrated curriculum.
GRADE: Six
The literature program involves a text that has a multicultural cross-section of reading selections. Vocabulary and comprehension are measured with each story. Through the use of fiction, poetry, non-fiction, plays and novels, students investigate the elements of a story and character development.
Grammar begins the year with a review of the basic parts of speech, while more information is added to each. Many types of writing are explored and practiced through book reports, creative writing, and the research paper.
Spelling and vocabulary are an integral part of the program. Vocabulary workshop, which includes analogies, is taught and assigned on a weekly basis. Students become familiar with the multiple meanings of words as well as prefixes and suffixes.
Study skills is an area which is addressed in language arts, but put into practice in all other areas. Students learn and practice managing time, space, and working with others. They also develop test-taking strategies, prepare oral presentations and use textbooks as reference skills.
GRADE: Seven
The language arts program encompasses the subtopics of grammar, literature, spelling, vocabulary, and creative writing. Students are expected to spell correctly at all times, apply penmanship, adequately write a composition utilizing the rules of grammar, complete the process of writing a research paper, read critically for understanding different literary genres, and develop public speaking skills.
GRADE: Eight
The purpose of the language arts program is to help the student enhance his/her reading-writing skills through an integrated curriculum of grammar, literature, spelling and other related activities.
MATHEMATICS
GRADE: Kindergarten
The kindergarten math program is based on NCTM standards, a program that fosters a step-by-step approach to developing number understanding, critical thinking and application.
GRADE: One
The purpose of the first grade mathematics program is to introduce and teach a combination of computation and problem-solving skills. These skills are taught through the use of manipulatives, drill, practice, cooperative learning, modeling, instruction, and making connections to the real world.
GRADE: Two
The purpose of the second grade math program is to introduce the concepts of numbers and operations, algebra, geometry, measurement, data analysis and probability, and problem solving.
GRADE: Three
This math program is based on NCTM standards. Each lesson in this program has step-by-step examples that show the students how to think about and solve the problem. Students begin the year with a review of place value and by the end learn basic geometry.
GRADE: Four
The fourth grade math program builds on the student's previous knowledge of numeration, operations, geometry, fractions, decimals, and problem solving. Students are introduced to algebraic expressions and larger number multiplication and division. The objectives are met through class instruction, small groups, cooperative groups, and drill and practice.
GRADE: Five
The purpose of the mathematics program is to help children learn math skills and concepts based on the NCTM standards. The goal is to ensure children learn such skills and concepts they need for academic success in everyday life. The focus is on application of concepts. Reading skills and strategies play an important role in problem solving for math. The concepts need to promote reasoning, communication, making connections, and designing and analyzing representations.
GRADE: Six
The sixth grade math curriculum provides the necessary background for students to learn math skills and concepts based on the NCTM standards. The goal is to ensure that children learn the skills and concepts they need for academic success. The focus is on the application of concepts. Reading skills and strategies play an important role in problem solving.
GRADE: Seven
This math class is a transitional program that provides students with an introduction to the concepts of algebra and geometry, and at the same time solidifies their grasp of arithmetic concepts and procedures. This seventh grade class begins the program and it is continued where this class ends in one of the eighth grade classes.
GRADE: Seven
The seventh grade mathematics curriculum begins with a review of basic properties of whole numbers and the order of operations. Students are then introduced to the use of variables and solving equations and inequalities. They develop an understanding of the decimal system and they round and estimate to solve problems. The fundamental concepts of geometry, fractions, the principles of number theory, using equations to solve problems, and computing percents are also covered.
GRADE: Eight
This eighth grade math class emphasizes the full range of topics needed for the successful study of algebra, including variables and equations, and emphasizing mathematics as problem solving.
GRADE: Eight
The purpose of this math class is to prepare the students for higher levels of thinking and learning. Students are taught various concepts in consumer math, and basic algebraic and geometric theories.
GRADES: Seven and Eight
Pre-Algebra Course content includes all standard topics of junior high mathematics. It enables students to make the transition from mathematics to algebra in one year. It emphasizes pre-algebra skills and concepts.
GRADES: Seven and Eight
Algebra This course is meant to initiate and help students understand the concepts of Algebra.
MUSIC
GRADE: Kindergarten
The music program allows the music teacher the ability to customize the program through a vast resource of songs: folk, traditional, multicultural, contemporary, popular, seasonal, holiday and patriotic.
GRADE: One
The purpose of the music program is to teach students basic musical concepts, and to enable them to recognize these concepts when listening to music. The program fosters an appreciation and enjoyment of music and its numerous genres and styles.
GRADE: Two
The second grade music program promotes an appreciation for various styles of music. Opportunities are provided for the students to express this appreciation in the form of song, illustrations, motions, sign language, and performing. Many elements of music are studied with the objective of establishing purposeful listeners. The students become familiar with musical notation including staff, measures, and notes.
GRADE: Three
The purpose of the music curriculum is to learn musical concepts such as melody, rhythm, and expressive qualities. Other concepts include harmony, form, and tone color. Students also learn to develop an appreciation for music.
GRADE: Four
The purpose of the fourth grade music program is to allow students to explore and sing a variety of musical pieces. Students are given the opportunity to explore rhythm through movement. Through the use of multicultural songs students understand cultural diversity. Students are introduced to new musical terminology as well as symbols and basic notation.
GRADE: Five
The purpose of the music program is to present the concepts of rhythm, melody, harmony, form, tone color, vocal ensembles, and texture. The content is formed by song literature from a variety of cultures, music for listening, movement activities, poetry, and story selections.
GRADE: Six
Sixth grade students are able to recognize and feel rhythm patterns. They study music from around the world as a group and individually. Students can describe most aspects of the orchestra. They learn about several types of music and several composers.
GRADE: Seven
The music program is built on teaching the elements and the cultural connections of music. Students are exposed to a wide variety of music from classical to modern day jazz, as well as studying and performing the components of a stage musical.
GRADE: Eight
The eighth grade music program incorporates concepts, themes, and styles of music to enhance the students' understanding of the creation of music. Performances and listening activities help the students increase their appreciation of music.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
GRADES: K-8
Healthy active living involves the combination of physical activity and appropriate lifestyle choices. Students should begin early on to acquire basic knowledge focusing on the development of motor skills, strength, cardio-vascular fitness, aerobic and anaerobic energy systems and flexibility in activities. Physical education provides students with knowledge, skills, and fitness that will enable them to develop and maintain healthy lifestyles.
RELIGION
GRADE: Kindergarten
Blest Are We is a developmental program, based on Scripture and rooted in the teachings of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. While the content for each year centers on one particular them, the kindergarten theme being "God loves me," strands of Church, Sacraments, Trinity and Morality are interwoven throughout the program.
GRADE: One
The purpose of the religion program is to help students know and love Jesus. They learn to live according to his teachings and share the good news with others through Christian Service.
GRADE: Two
The purpose of the second grade curriculum is to help the students understand their faith, allowing them to form a closer relationship with God. This is done through instruction in doctrine, scripture, morality, and prayer. Throughout the year the children are encouraged to live as Jesus lived through Christian service.
GRADE: Three
The overall goal of the religion curriculum is to help students understand Catholic beliefs and traditions. Dimensions addressed include learning about doctrine, scripture, and morality; the experience of prayer, building a value system; and respect and love for the Catholic Church.
GRADE: Four
The Religion program is a developmental program based on the Scripture and teachings of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Included in the program is a sharing of many faith dimensions including morality, experience of prayer and liturgy, the building of a value system, and ability to relate teaching to life. Students are led to the realization of God's loving presence all around them through a variety of learning activities.
GRADE: Five
The purpose of the religion program is to learn about the sacraments of the Catholic Church. This is done by learning the content of our Catholic faith, celebrating it in worship, connecting it to everyday life, and learning to pray.
GRADE: Six
Students in the sixth grade are exposed to the Old Testament. Students learn about the key people in the Jewish tradition, which shape our Judeo-Christian roots. The review of doctrine, including prayer, morality and the Church calendar are included in the sixth grade program.
GRADE: Seven
The goals of the seventh grade religion program are to teach the students to explore and appreciate the life of Jesus, helping them become a community of faith. Through Christian Service projects and activities the students learn to be considerate of others and to accept personal responsibility.
GRADE: Eight
The purpose of the religion program is to help students understand and appreciate the challenges and contributions of the Catholic Church as it developed from the first century through the twentieth century. Students will be able to describe characteristics of justice and to appreciate the centrality of justice to the Christian message.
SCIENCE
GRADE: Kindergarten
The kindergarten science program is built on three levels of inquiry (Scaffold Inquiry). All three engage students in activities that build a strong science foundation and help them develop a full understanding of the inquiry process. The subject matter is divided into four units: Life Science, Earth Science, Physical Science, and Space and Technology. The foundation of all learning in science is based on hands-on activities that are relevant to daily living.
GRADE: One
The purpose of the first grade Science Program is to provide hands-on experiences that are fundamental to the inquiry approach to science. The science program presents opportunities for students to investigate, explore, observe, gather data and make inquiries about their world. Students are introduced to the following science subjects: Life, Physical, Earth, Space and Technology.
GRADE: Two
The second grade science curriculum begins with a review of the scientific method followed by learning experiences through classroom experimentation. The primary subject matter of second grade science includes Life, Physical, Earth, Space and Technology. Throughout the year, useful connections between the natural world and the designed world are made, offering students opportunities that enhance their decision-making about their health, environment, and world.
GRADE: Three
The goal is to develop an understanding of Life, Physical, Earth, Space and Technology. In addition to use of the text boo, students learn material through use of directed and guided scientific inquiries, visuals such as flashcards, leveled readers and overheads, and computer software.
GRADE: Four
The fourth grade Science Program continues to explore the areas of Life Science, Physical Science, and Earth Science. This is accomplished through reading, class discussion, and experiment activities.
GRADE: Five
The Science Program is based on the National Science Education Standards. The program integrates related areas, and emphasizes the scientific method to explore ideas and concepts, giving students a better understanding of how their world works.
GRADE: Six
Students utilize the scientific method to solve problems. Sixth graders explore earth science. Main topics include rocks, minerals, plate tectonics, earthquakes, volcanoes, and a study of geologic time.
GRADE: Seven
The science program is an introduction to and exploration into the topic of Life Science. The goal of this program is to encourage students to study the world around them and their interactions within it. In addition, the students also serve as mentors for younger students when preparing for an annual Science Fair.
GRADE: Eight
The eighth grade science program is an introduction to physical science. Students take part in the annual school Science Fair and assist younger students with projects.
SOCIAL STUDIES
GRADE: Kindergarten
Kindergarten students begin to develop an awareness of the world around them. The abilities to make decisions and to develop social skills are essential to students as they learn to function in their broadening environment.
GRADE: One
The purpose of the social studies curriculum is to provide children with knowledge about the world around them. Students learn about their school, community, country and the earth. The program also incorporates geography and research skills, and biographies of pertinent Americans.
GRADE: Two
The purpose of the second grade social studies program is to provide the students with concepts that will help them become active, informed, and responsible citizens. The primary subject matter of the social studies program includes such concepts as communities, caring for our earth, working together as good citizens, our country yesterday and today, and people and places in history. These concepts will help the students develop the skills they will need to live and work in a global society.
GRADE: Three
The third grade social studies curriculum focuses on the students as members of a community as well as other community members around the country. It discusses how we are alike and different from communities all over the world. It studies how communities have changed over time and what has influenced this. Each unit contains geography activities and map reading lessons. The workbook contains activities and worksheets that are designed to reinforce lessons introduced in the class for homework.
GRADE: Four
The fourth grade social studies program focuses on U.S. geography. The program helps students organize their thinking to develop competencies that they will need as citizens in a diverse, changing, and interdependent world.
GRADE: Five
The fifth grade social studies program provides rich, comprehensive content that captures the students' imagination and makes them eager to learn more. Every unit teaches a key target skill, such as cause and effect that helps students read for understanding. Thinking skills are taught, practiced, and applied throughout each lesson to help students become critical thinkers and problem solvers. The curriculum focuses on map skills, current events, geography skills, and exploring the United States from the early migrations to America until the Civil War.
GRADE: Six
Sixth grade social studies students are exposed to many aspects of Ancient History. They begin the year with the early Stone Age, and travel to places like Mesopotamia, Egypt, China, Japan, the Americas, and Africa until they complete the year with the Mediterranean empires of Greece and Rome. Students study geography using map skills and learning geographical placements of continents, countries and bodies of water.
GRADE: Seven
The seventh grade history curriculum focuses on the tensions over slavery, the Civil War, and the period of Reconstruction. It looks at the development of the West, and the growth of American cities in the late 1800's and early 1900's and the important issues of the Progressive Era. In geography the students study the five themes of geography, the tools and techniques used by geographers, climate regions, population density, cultural changes, world resources, the United States, Canada, Africa, and Australia.
GRADE: Eight
The purpose of the social studies program is to make the students aware of the global society in which they live. By analyzing the causes and effects of specific events in history, the students recognize how one event impacts upon another. The eighth grade program centers on the United States involvement in war and its devastating consequences. It also helps students to appreciate their freedom and the cost others have paid for them to enjoy it. Students take pride in their country and learn to become responsible citizens.
